Cannabis Trends: THC Capsules

May 10, 2022 | Cannabis Blog

The world of marijuana is constantly evolving. For years, just cannabis flower, oil, or edibles were the primary way to get your fix, but legalization and decriminalization have led to innovation. Concentrates, drinks, sugars, and more have all come from this innovation. One trend has a little more wind in the sails, THC pills and capsules. Yes, THC capsules are now available, which makes cannabis consumption easier and more discreet. People love having the convenience of THC capsules without missing out on the benefits of cannabis.

You will find THC capsules in various potencies to match your body’s needs. This article explains how THC pills and capsules can help integrate cannabis into your lifestyle.

What Are THC Capsules Made of?

THC is fat-soluble and hydrophobic. That means it is repelled by water and prefers oily and fatty substances like oils and butter. Our body absorbs THC better if it’s introduced in an oily substance. For this reason, THC capsules are made of cannabis and a carrier oil. They contain ground cannabis flowers or liquid concentrate along with a carrier oil, which is usually a form of Medium Chained Triglyceride (MTC) oil [1].

What Types of THC Capsules Are There?

You will find several types of THC capsules in marijuana dispensaries.

There are THC capsules that are made with decarboxylated cannabis flowers. To produce active THC, the flowers must be heated to turn THCa into THC, which is the effective form of marijuana—a process called decarboxylation. So, it’s not raw flower in these, but processed slightly so as to bring out more active ingredients.

Besides THC and CBD, decarboxylated cannabis contains all the natural compounds of marijuana, such as terpenes and flavonoids as well as all lesser cannabinoids like CBC, CBG, CBN, and more. This is the so-called full-spectrum THC.

Other THC capsules are made from crystalline THC instead of flowers. During processing, manufacturers isolate THC and discard all other cannabis compounds. In this case, the THC capsules only contain THC and none of the other cannabis compounds. These are called THC isolate capsules.

There are capsules that contain pure extracted cannabis oils too, not just limited to THC. This is another means of ingesting the most raw plant nutrients possible, depending on the extraction method.

What Are the Benefits of THC Capsules?

Most people have associated THC with joints, pre-rolls, and flowers. There is certainly an appeal to rolling your cannabis flowers and taking in the scents and aromas of marijuana.

While THC capsules cannot deliver that connection with the flower itself, they still offer significant benefits.

Easy THC Dosage

A THC capsule has a definite THC dosage. Once you take your pill, you know exactly how much THC you are consuming, so THC capsules can help people monitor their consumption and precisely calculate their daily dosage.

THC Capsules Make It Easy to Micro-Dose

Some consumers like to take their THC throughout the day in small doses. This is what is called micro-dosing. The reasoning behind this is that THC stays in the body in stable and balanced levels without sudden bursts and abrupt downs.

You can find THC capsules in various dosages. If you like micro-dosing, you can choose a low THC potency and take more capsules throughout the day. Our friends at Glacier Extracts extraction facility can produce 2.5mg, 5mg, 10mg capsules of THC and/or blends of THC:CBD in 2:1, 1:1, 1:2 ratios of CBD:THC.

Smaller THC Doses Are Great for People with Low Tolerance

Cannabis flowers and pre-rolls are difficult to gauge in terms of how much THC you will be getting. Some people benefit from lower THC doses but have a low tolerance to high-density THC products.

THC capsules with a low THC content can be exactly what these people need: enough THC to assist their body without causing any undesirable side effects.

THC Capsules Are Convenient

Instead of vaping or smoking your THC in public, you can ingest THC capsules by mouth similar to taking other medications or supplements. This can be a discreet way of consuming marijuana without the inconvenience associated with smoking or vaping, as you won’t need to carry around any smoking paraphernalia. This makes your THC consumption handier and more comfortable.

Besides capsules being a discreet way of consumption, some people balk at the idea of smoking. They don’t like the thought of smoking cannabis and are concerned about the health of their lungs. If you want to benefit from THC without the inconvenience of smoking, then THC capsules are a great solution for you alongside edibles and ingestible oils.

You Can Find THC Capsules with CBD

Cannabis contains hundreds of cannabinoids, of which THC and CBD are the most abundant. Some THC capsules contain a considerable quantity of CBD, while others only a small one. Studies [2] suggest that CBD may counteract the negative effects of THC. A combination of CBD and THC may help deliver the full benefit of cannabis without the unpleasant effects of THC.

What Are the Drawbacks of THC Capsules?

THC Capsules Take Longer to Act

When you ingest THC capsules, they have to go through your digestive tract: they are first absorbed by the stomach and then metabolized by the liver before they can enter your bloodstream. This process takes time. It’s important to consider this difference when considering oral consumption. Please see our MJ User Guide for proper dosing considerations.

Inhaled THC is absorbed through the lung capillaries into the bloodstream. Within seconds to minutes, you feel the effects of THC. THC capsules, on the other hand, can take up to 2 hours to start showing their effect. This can trick you into believing that your THC capsules had no effect. Therefore, you may be tempted to take some more.

You should wait at least three hours before taking another THC capsule. THC capsules take longer to act and consuming more than the normal dosage could cause unpleasant side effects such as impaired body movement, drowsiness, mood swings, and nausea. You should be particularly careful if you are on medication, as cannabis may interact with several drugs. You should also be careful if you have a personal or family history of psychosis, schizophrenia, depression, bipolar disorder, and if you are pregnant or breastfeeding or suffer from a liver, kidney, heart, or lung condition.

The positive side of THC capsules is that the effects linger longer in your body.

It Removes The Rituals of Smoking THC

People who you like the smell of cannabis flowers and enjoy rolling them and touching them may miss the ritual and process associated with smoking. While THC capsules will deliver the same effect, the method of consumption differs significantly and what is a boon for some may be a problem for others. There is a certain pleasure in pre-rolls and marijuana flowers that adds to the enjoyment of cannabis, as rolling and smoking cannabis flowers indulges all five senses. It can be an experience itself just working with the plant and making it ready to smoke, and some people do enjoy that experience above all else.
